Week 6: Matchmoving

Through this week’s study, I have learned how some science fiction props in special effects movies are added to the characters. First, we need to set up two different project teams, one to calculate the motion of the camera by adding tracking points, and the other to calculate the motion of the character’s head by adding tracking points of the face. The combination of the two data allows the props to follow the movement of the character very accurately without deviation. It should be noted that the motion mode of the camera is different for different tracking materials. Sometimes, the motion mode of the camera needs to be given in the attribute, otherwise the correct motion of the camera may not be calculated.

Schematic diagram of tracking points on the face:

Import the helmet model into the software, and match the exact position of the face in the first frame, then click “Project Points on 3D Models”, and then recalculate camera movement. This allows the movement of the face model and tracking points to match the movement of the character’s face.

In Maya, put the helmet under the camera group and this allows the helmet to move with the character’s movements.
